Halal, vegetarian, gluten-free: cooking for every diet at one table

Practical ways to cook one meal that works for a household with different diets and allergies.

Halal, vegetarian, gluten-free: cooking for every diet at one table

Many households mix diets: one person eats halal, another is vegetarian, a child has a food allergy. Cooking separate meals every night is exhausting. A few habits make one shared meal possible.

Start from dishes that are naturally flexible

Bowls, curries and tagines are easy to adapt: cook the base with vegetables, legumes and spices, then add the protein separately. A red lentil curry or a falafel bowl is vegetarian from the start and filling for everyone.

Know the hidden ingredients

  • Halal and pork-free: check broths, gelatin and some sausages or deli meats.
  • Vegetarian: chicken broth and fish sauce are common hidden animal ingredients.
  • Gluten-free: regular soy sauce contains wheat; tamari is a common gluten-free alternative, but check the label.

Allergies are not preferences

For an allergy, avoid the ingredient completely, read every label and keep utensils and surfaces separate to prevent cross-contact. The nine major allergens in the US are milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soy and sesame.

Let the app filter for you

Mescola applies your household’s allergies as a strict filter and your diets as defaults you can switch off for a single search, so suggestions and swaps never include what you need to avoid.
